The MLB Draft was this past week. As usual, it was not nearly as covered as the NBA or NFL Drafts. And rightfully so. In the MLB, most people who are drafted aren’t playing in the bigs for another 3 to 4 years. But there might be one name that you heard a lot over the week, and that is Adley Rutchman. Rutchman was drafted first overall by the Orioles, and when I first saw it, I didn’t really think too much about the pick. But then I saw this video:
Yes, this guy was walked with the bases loaded. That is a special event.
Rutschman is a catcher for Oregon State, and he was the unanimous choice for all MLB mock drafters this season. And the numbers, even in college, back this up. He has (in 57 games) an OBP of .575, 17 home runs, a 1.326 OPS, and 58 RBIs. Last season he slashed .408/9/83 in 67 games.
Not only are those numbers some of the best we’ve seen in a while, he is also a catcher. He’s not a bad one either. Not to mention, he is very close to major league ready. Rutschman could be tearing up the league as early as 2021. He has already drawn Buster Posey comparisons, but the truth is, he has a real shot to be even better.
The Orioles got themselves a gem.
